Hey, thanks for tuning in to this in-depth review and styling tutorial of BluMaan’s Monarch Matte Paste.
This review is sure to answer any questions that you might have about the product.
To save your guys’ time, I’ll be breaking this review and styling tutorial of Blumaan’s Monarch Matte Paste down into a few parts. You can skip to whatever part is most relevant (most likely the product review, so skip about halfway down the page). First, I’ll be introducing my own hair type so you guys have a reference point to how this product performs. Then I’ll go into the performance of the product and finish off by teaching how this product will work for other hair types.
My Hair Type
So firstly! My hair type. I’m an Asian guy so I understand the struggle a lot of us go through with poofy hair that loves to stick up. My hair is fairly wavy, and definitely thick. My hair does not like to cooperate despite being wavy & not nearly as stiff as some Asian hair. Once in a certain shape, the only way to make it restyle is to wash my hair with shampoo & conditioner and completely “reset” my hair. Not to mention, it also gets frizzy without quality products that can really nourish my hair to make it as healthy as possible. So, imagine something like the hairstyle above, except dark brown/black.
TL;DR, I have thick, wavy, frizzy Asian hair and I am currently wearing it in a short-medium length forward quiff that was inspired by BluMaan himself! So check out his video on how he styles his short quiff because that’s basically how I do it too.
Monarch Matte Paste Review
Monarch comes in the same packaging as most of Blumaan’s products; a simple plastic black jar with the products unique coloured animal theme on it. In this case, it’s a stylish lion with a very voluminous mane, a testament to the slick volume this product can give? Let’s find out.
So, overall packaging is quite average. The quality doesn’t feel special but the artwork can definitely make for a cool collection piece if you’re like me and like to collect unique product jars. The product has a light, fresh, clean smell to it. To me, it smells like a light, airy cologne. In the hair, it doesn’t smell too strong so even if you’re not a big fan of the smell, you won’t have to worry about it throughout the day. The smell is fairly neutral to me, so I think it’ll be hard to really hate the smell.
Scooping the product out is incredibly easy. It comes out incredibly soft and creamy. It spreads very easily in the hand, and this softness lends itself to an incredibly smooth and tug-free application process. Whether used in dry or wet hair, Monarch is sure to go into the hair smoothly. Using more of this product will provide more hold and slightly more shine.
The finish that monarch gives is one that has a slight shine, good pliable hold, and a great amount of texture. Monarch gives my hair a lot of control and remains soft in the hair, so it’s easy for me to run my hands through my hair and touch it up throughout the day. The texture is absolutely fantastic. It gives a hint too much shine for my liking since it is supposed to be a matte product, so I’d categorize it more as a natural shine product. For me, Monarch is a great product on days that I just want to throw something in my hair and head out the door. It’ll tame my hair and give good hold and control throughout the day. I use it more for messy, textured hairstyles and it works fantastic for that.
Other Hair types
Monarch is one of those products that can work well for a variety of hair types since it doesn’t excel at just one type. For thin hair guys, Monarch can help give a little bit of body to your hair and give it support and control throughout the day. Combined with some blowdrying, it can help to give lasting volume and control throughout the day.
Thick hair guys like myself, it’s really easy to work this into your hairstyling arsenal, unless you have very stubborn, difficult to work with hair. In that case, your hair would be an exception and very strong hold products, like Cavalier Clay, would work much better at holding your hair.
For everyone else, Monarch will be a consistent, reliable, go-to friend that you can always depend on for results. Whether you need control or some shine, Monarch is easy to use and will provide just that. It can help to control and accentuate natural waves, or provide volume and texture for the day.
Monarch Matte Paste is a great, versatile product. This product really can work for a lot of people, and while some of you might think it’s only average, others will think it’s great. Overall for me, I quite like this product, and it’s my go to on days that I’m feeling lazy and simply want to slap something in my hair and run out the door. While it’s not an amazing that will blow you away, it does a good enough job that I’ve incorporated it into my arsenal of styling products. Final rating, 8.5/10.
